Not since the days of the old half-mile configuration, going back roughly 20 years, has there been Late Models turning competitive laps at St. Croix Valley Raceway. But for the first time since the track has been reconfigured to its current quarter mile length, the Big Dogs will once again thunder across the St. Croix clay.
St. Croix Valley Raceway is proud to present their Fan Appreciation Night/Bullring Blast! featuring WISSOTA Late Models on Friday night, August 31. Joining the Late Models on that night will be open Modifieds, UMSS Traditional Sprints, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and Purestocks.
In years gone by, Modifieds were a regular class at the quarter-mile speedplant, and they thrilled the capacity crowd on hand when they returned last June as part of the first annual Open Wheel Nationals. And although the Late Models have never raced on the quarter-mile track, the dimensions are of little concern. Stated promoter and track co-owner Ron Bernhagen, “Our track is as wide or wider than most, at 85 feet through the corners. I’m excited about the Late Models coming here – they put on a great show and I expect the racing to be tremendous.” After hot-lapping a Late Model on the track last Friday, veteran racer Rick Kobs echoed Bernhagen’s enthusiasm. “Anyone who thinks this track isn’t big enough to race Late Models, tell them to talk to me. There’s room for three and four wide racing out there, and the Late Models will be able to use all of that track.” There may be no more qualified authority than Kobs. Rick is the son of track founder Al Kobs, and has enjoyed a long and successful racing career in virtually every class of dirt racing, including Late Models.
While expectations are high for the Modifieds and WISSOTA Late Models, the Traditional Sprints and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds have been proving their mettle all summer long. Regular fans of the raceway practically demand thrill-a-minute two and three wide racing from the sprint cars, and the sprinters almost always oblige. And the season has yet to see a run-away winner in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division, with winning margins often times measured in tenths of a second.
Fan Appreciation night also means there will be tons of giveaways throughout the evening as a way for The Valley to thank the families who have supported them this season. During the summer, word has spread to area race fans that St. Croix Valley Raceway consistently offers some of the best family entertainment value available, and the Bullring Blast! promises to continue that trend as a kick-off to the Labor Day holiday weekend. Adult general admission tickets for this event are $18, seniors (65+) $16, students (6-15) $5, and kids under 6 are always free. Family packs (2 adults and up to 4 kids under 16) are also available for this event at $41. Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:05.
